Setting up IPCOP

Our tenants are complaining about the internet being unusable several times a day.

I suspect it is caused by some tenants, eating up bandwidth, using bit-torrent programs.

So, I setup an IPCOP server to control MIME. I set it so that .torrent files are not allowed to be downloaded.

At first, it works okay, but then they trick the file to be saved as .txt file, then change the file type back to .torrent file after done downloading.

So, I have to push harder by going full proxy control. L7 Filter along with Advanced Proxy and URL Filter modules will be used for this.

L7 or Application Layer will be controlled. Along with the full proxy, I can now manage both web access & bandwidth usage.

SARG, log management module, is also a very good addon. It is used for tracking down which users are using up all the bandwidths and what is causing the bandwidth hogging.

IPCOP is old and outdated. Only a few group of people are using it nowadays.

If anyone is interested in setting up a proxy firewall, try some of these alternatives:

Endian (Recommended)
IPFire
pfSense
m0n0wall
ClarkConnect (or ClearOS)
SmoothWall
