Wrong memory amount detected on XP

Today, google chrome has crashed every few minutes.

First, I thought it was either chrome bug or VGA driver being outdated, but then other programs started crashing as well.

Whenever I opened up more than 2-3 programs at once, one or two of them would crash instantly.

It is a sign up memory problem. Looking at system properties, I found out that my memory count is only 1GB, instead of 3GB. My OS is Windows XP 32-bit SP3.

After googling for awhile, some people recommend going into BIOS and enable “memory remapping” or something, but that is not the case for me as there is no such option in my BIOS.

What I did was changing VGA from PCI to PCI-Express under BIOS setting and rebooted. Now, my system is showing full count, 3GB of RAM.

I can now open up many programs at once without a problem.

Turn out my memory module was about to die. It went 3GB, then back to 1GB, back and forth. Now my PC won’t even boot up. The 2GB module was the culprit. I am now RMAing it for a replacement.
